What is Maskne?

Maskne, or mask acne, is the result of irritation and microbial growth that can happen when we are wearing masks for extended periods of time.

It’s a new problem for most of us, but thankfully herbs have been soothing irritated skin and preventing infection for longer than covid-19 has even been around.

How to Prevent & Soothe

We curated the perfect maskne treatment products to help prevent and soothe.

Steam, scrub, moisturize with botanical oils and antimicrobial essential oils, and protect. This set is dense with antimicrobial, astringent, and clarifying herbs, exfoliants, moisturizers, and protective botanicals.

This step-by-step guide will keep your skin happy while you mask up.

Step 1 Squeaky Clean:

Wet face, shake about a teaspoon of powder into a small bowl or the palm of your hand. Add drops of water to achieve your desired consistency. Apply to your face the same way you would a soap or scrub. Leave it on for up to 2 minutes. Feel the hibiscus, rosehips, and frankincense soothing away the irritation. Wash off with warm water while gently scrubbing face with forward circular motion. Feel the rosehips exfoliating and carrying away the accumulated, um, shmutz from under the mask. Enjoy the deep clean.

We enjoy taking this step immediately after removing our mask at the end of the day.

If you feel that your skin is not oily or needing deep cleansing, but more is irritated and needs intense soothing, we recommend our Licorice Love at this step.

Step 2 Take a Breather:

Place 1/4 cup of herbs into 4 cups of boiled hot water. Position your face over the water. Cover the top of your head with a towel, like a canopy. Be mindful this is hot water! We know, time is precious, enjoy the steam for 2-15 minutes.

May also be used as a facial toner, rinse, or spray, simply prepare as a tea and keep in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Step 3 Blissful Earth Body Oil:

Although this is technically a body oil, it works wonders on the face. The botanical oils, herbs, and essential oils are perfect for soothing and moisturizing skin that may be combating microbial growth due to irritation that a mask can cause. We love it for moisturizing skin after steaming and/or cleansing at the end of a masky day. Simply pour a few drops onto clean hands, spread between finger tips, and massage into skin as you would any facial oil. It can also be used with a jade roller for added benefit.

Step 4 All Purpose Salve:

Depending on the environment, the mask, and the individual, some of us find it very helpful to apply a very thin layer of All Purpose salve to our skin before donning our masks. This salve is also a great hand salve for healing skin after washing frequently.

Please spot test these and any new products on a small unaffected area before use. If irritation or sensitivity occurs, discontinue use. Do not use if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to any of the ingredients in the product. All ingredients are listed on packages and product pages.
