Discover Our Base Oil — Slow Infused With Herbs And Love

In the ways of healers of old, we slowly cold infuse oil with soothing and healing orgainic herbs for use in all of our oil based products. We start with pure, non-GMO, Italian grapeseed oil and then add organic Calendula, Comfrey, Plantain, St. John's Wort, Burdock and Thyme. We allow the infusion to gently age, protected from heat and light in non-plastic containers, for a minimum of 6 weeks. This extracts the healing components and phytonutrients of the herbs into the oil for use. We then use this as our Base Oil for our balms, salves, serums, butters, and oils. No wonder our products are so Amazing! Amazing Herbs, Amazing Skin.

Our Organic Herbs

The brilliant yellow marigold flower has long been the queen of herbal medicine for skin issues. In addition to supporting ceramide production in skin, and speeding cell regeneration, calendula is rich in nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and vitamin A. It has been used reliably for wounds, sore nursing nipples, insect bites, chapped lips.

Also known as Knitbone, comfrey is known to accelerate healing of both bone and skin tissues by its ability to increase mitosis (cell division). Bruises, rashes, age spots, and stubborn sores that refuse to heal have been seen to benefit from use of comfrey. High concentrations of  comfrey are not recommended, as most things in life, balance is key.

St. John's Wort has been used topically by herbalists as an anti-inflammatory improving the overall condition of the skin in skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, increasing blood flow to the skin, and reducing the appearance of fine red lines. A mild topical pain reliever, it also is used for nerve pain and wound healing.

Thyme is both soothing and refreshing, has been used by herbalists for its antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It can calm, even and balance skin, unclog pores, and reduce excess oil. It has been often used for acne, rosacea, eczema, rashes, cuts, scrapes, and sore muscles.

More than just for candy! When used topically, licorice is a wonderful herb for soothing skin. Many know it only as a topical antiviral remedy, but it is also known to block the reuptake of our natural cortisols, thereby supporting our natural anti-inflammatory efforts. It also can help to lighten dark spots on the skin. We love it for acne, eczema, psoriasis and rosacea.

Burdock is better known as a food ingredient but we also love it for our skin! High in fatty acids, B vitamins, and iron, burdock is both antifungal and antibacterial. Similar in its topical applications to licorice, it has historically been used to treat acne, rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema.

If you are ever walking in the woods around our neighborhood and get stung by a bee, just pick some wild plantain, squish it up and apply it to the sting! It will feel better in minutes! Rich in phytonutrients and minerals, plantain is an astringent, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. Plantain has been used for stings, scalds, burns, and wounds that are slow to heal. Nerve related skin symptoms with nerve pain, such as we see with shingles, benefit from plantain as well.

Known for its moisturizing and astringent (contracting) properties, this non-allergenic oil absorbs readily into the skin, making it the perfect vehicle for delivering infused components in a topical application. High in antioxidant and anti-aging vitamins C and E, and PUFAʼs (Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acids) it alone would nourish the skin even before we worked our magic. Here at OAHerbal we also love that it has a longer shelf life than some other oils like olive oil, making it the perfect carrier oil for our Base Oil without needing a preservative.

Our Infusion Process

Although it would be easier to simply purchase herbal extractions and blend them to manufacture our products, we value our own integrity and your trust more than anything!  This is why we infuse this blend of herbs into the oil in our own FDA registered facility, right here in NJ, USA. We keep the infusing oil in cool dark conditions, much like a wine cellar to protect the phytonutrients and fragile oils in their best condition! Although it would be much easier, we do not use plastic containers for this process, as we want to avoid any toxins leaching into the precious oil.

After this infusion is complete, we then strain it with a fine sieve, and use it for most our oil based products. We do have some oil based products with less herbs, simply for more a more focused function and to have a simpler ingredient panel for those who may be sensitive. It is indeed quite a process but we find that the result is well worth it, and we think you will find the same is true for you.
